The Arrival of Benjamin Eliot Brousseau
After taking two classes in natural childbirth, reading Ina May's childbirthing book and practicing breathing and holding ice cubes - Dr. Binkley said at almost two weeks past the due date, it was time for a baby eviction.
So on Tuesday, June 21, we checked into Marin General for the induction. Ben was 41.5 weeks and that was as long as the doctor was willing to let him remain inside his cozy home.
I got a dose of Cervadil and setup in the hospital. Dave went to Woodlands Market to grab some takeaway and we ate dinner and watched TV. Not much was happening, so Dave went home to get some sleep and feed the cats.
At 3am, I was dilated to 3cm and the midwife said I should call Dave. So I called him and he came back. And we waited. We waited all Wednesday. The started giving me Pitocin in the morning to move contractions along. It was a long day. We watched Law and Order marathons. Dave worked on a report. We ate free pudding. But the contractions never moved past 3cm. So that evening, we decided to go ahead and do the C-section.
I have never seen nurses and doctors move so fast. It was a whirlwind of forms, drugs, blood work, gowning up for Dave, explanation of procedures and such.
The first step was getting the local and then spinal, which would paralyze me for the surgery. Now, for the girl who was freaked out to get an IV, this was the worst part in my mind. Dr. Lin, the anesthesiologist, was super awesome and in the end, it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. They dressed me in funny compression socks and got her ready. Then Dave got to come in.
Ben was a very big baby and the doctors had a hard time trying to get him out. They pushed and pulled and finally, Ben came out. When they put him on the scale, he weighed 12 pounds and 5 ounces and as 23 inches long. Ben was the biggest baby they had seen that year at the hospital.
After the delivery, Ben went to the nursery where the gave him a bath and a bottle since his glucose was low. I went to the recovery room where we waited for me to regain some feeling in my legs. Dave fed me ice chips and finally I could wiggle my knee and they took me to my post-delivery room. They brought Ben into the recovery room, but I was so drugged up that I barely remember seeing him.
The next morning, they brought him to my room early, around 6am and we were able to properly meet for the first time.
