We woke up super early this morning and took the Qantas 835a flight to Hobart (hooray for frequent flier points). We picked up our rental car (a Toyota Corolla). And went to downtown Hobart to find our hotel and explore. Tasmania is beautiful. There are a lot of hills and green, green trees.
We had coffee in a cafe and then walked about. Hobart is fabulous. It is one of those small big towns. They have everything you could think you would need, but the vibe is very laid back. Sort of a Mill Valley meets Berkeley feel to me.
We ended up at the Salamanca Market, which is an arts & crafts meets farmer's market on Saturdays. We bought some coffee, cherries, bread and Tasmania tea towels. The market was packed, but so much fun. They had everything you could need and it was not too touristy.
We walked along the water front. We saw a boat called the Steve Irwin and some really cool sculptures. We stopped at a local brewery for a beer/champagne at the Lark Distillery. Then we went to Maldini Cafe for a coffee and beer, because after no lunch and one champagne, Holly needed coffee.
We went back to the hotel to rest a bit. We wanted to go eat at Barilla Bay, but they were having a private event. So we went to Battery Point and got some dinner at Francisco, a tapas restaurant. It was excellent. Battery Point is the coolest neighborhood. It has hills and ocean views like San Francisco. The area features beautiful homes and shops - a very European feel.
